Individual Supplemental Health Insurance Market Earns Nearly $7.5 Billion in Premium During 2025
Refreshed data shows that the individual Supplemental Health insurance market boasted 12.9 million policyholders and earned $7.46 billion in premium during 2025, a 2.5% increase from 2024. Note that these amounts are specific to the individual market and exclude group and worksite products. Many (though not all) of these policyholders are seniors. These products can be sold in the years leading up to age 65, during the sale of a Medicare insurance product, and after the sale of a Medicare product. Also, a note for return readers: we chose to exclude Accident products from the totals shared here, given the lower interest in those products among seniors.
These products are typically priced at lower loss ratios than Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement products, with actuals ranging from 28% to 66% across 2024 and 2025. Year over year, actual loss ratios rose for Dental (+1.6%), Critical Illness (+2.1%), and Short Term Care (+6.2%), while Hospital Indemnity fell 1.4%.
These products are growing, and population data suggests that these markets will continue to grow. See the map below, showing the current target market population (age 50-80) by state.
